A Mini Guide to Cartagena, Colombia

Cartagena is a city on the northern coast of Colombia. A port city in the Caribbean Coast Region, it is the fifth largest city in Colombia. The economy of Cartagena is dependent on the maritime and petrochemical industries and tourism. Founded in 1533 and named after the city of Cartagena in Spain, the city served a key role in administration and expansion of the Spanish Empire during colonial times. It was the centre of political and economic activity owing to the presence of royalty and wealthy viceroys through much of that era. Cartagena’s historical walled city and fortress, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are among the city’s many historical attractions. Cartagena also has an active and colourful culture.
